What is Tantra?
The word Tantra originates from ancient Sanskrit and translates to “that which is woven” or, in other words, “that which is connected.” So, in tantra, we work primarily around connection; connecting with oneself and others. We explore ways in which we can improve that connection with ourselves, and from there, how we connect with someone else, and then, with the rest of the world.
Let’s first explore the concept of connection with oneself.
From a tantric perspective, a strong and healthy connection with oneself begins with the heart. For tantricas, this connection to the heart is the foundation of everything. We are of course connected to the mind, body, or emotions, but these are considered secondary. Tantra is, above all, the path of the heart.
“For tantricas, this connection to the heart is the foundation of everything.”
In today’s world, particularly in the West, this heart-centred connection has diminished. Those aligned more with masculine energy (often men, though not exclusively men) tend to shift their connection from the heart to the head, relying primarily on reasoning. Many masculine-dominant individuals make decisions with their heads and live their lives driven by intellect.
Conversely, those attuned to feminine energy (often women, but again, not exclusively) often shift their connection from the heart downward to the belly, where emotions reside. Many feminine-dominant individuals now approach life primarily through their feelings and emotional responses.
This disconnection from the heart prevents us from meeting each other at a fundamental level. To truly connect, we need to return to the heart.
And this is the essence of tantra: it is the path of the heart.
