Tantric Breathing Exercises for Each Element

We recommend alternating the breathing exercises daily, practicing a different one each day based on one of the five elements:

Earth
Stability & Grounding

Purpose
To feel centered, calm, and rooted in the body.

Focus on:
Deep, slow, heavy breathing. Let tension flow into the earth.

Exercise

Grounding Belly Breathing

  • 1. Sit or lie down comfortably with your hands on your lower belly.

  • 2. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your belly to rise.

  • 3. Exhale slowly through your mouth with a gentle sigh.

  • 4. Visualize roots growing from your feet into the earth.

  • 5. Repeat for 5–10 minutes.

Water
Flow & Emotions

Purpose
To release emotional tension, increase softness and flexibility.

Focus on:
Rhythm, fluidity, and emotional release.

Exercise

Wave-Like Breathing

  • 1. Sit comfortably and imagine a gentle ocean wave.

  • 2. Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, no pauses in between.
  • 3. Let your breath move smoothly like flowing water.

  • 4. Visualize water flowing through your body, washing away blockages.

  • 5. Continue for 5–10 minutes.

Fire
Energy & Transformation

Purpose
To energize, activate inner fire, awaken motivation.

Focus on:
Intensity, clarity, and awakening inner power.

Important:
Not suitable for those with high blood pressure, heart issues, or pregnancy.

Exercise

Fire Breath

  • 1. Sit upright. Take a relaxed breath in through your nose.
  • 2. Begin short, sharp exhales through your nose by quickly contracting your lower belly (inhales happen passively).

  • 3. Do 20–30 pumps, then rest. Repeat for 2–3 rounds.

Air
Lightness & Clarity

Purpose
To create space, calm the mind, and restore mental balance.

Focus on:
Balance, spaciousness, and clear perception.

Exercise

Box Breathing (Square Breath)

  • 1. Inhale for 4 counts – hold for 4 counts – exhale for 4 counts – hold for 4 counts.
  • 2. Repeat this cycle 4–6 times.
  • 3. Imagine air flowing through your body, bringing lightness and clarity.

Ether/Space
Stillness & Connection

To cultivate inner silence and connect to something greater.

Focus on:
Presence, inner stillness, and a sense of openness or unity.

Exercise

Silent Breath Awareness

  • 1. Sit quietly in a meditation posture.

  • 2. Let your breath flow naturally, without control.

  • 3. Bring your awareness to the still space between inhale and exhale.
  • 4. Stay present in that stillness, observing.

  • 5. Practice for 5–15 minutes.
