The benefits of Tantra

For Couples

Integrating Tantra into your relationship as a couple can be a deeply transformative and enriching experience. At its core, Tantra is about mindfulness, deep connection, and expanding awareness — especially within the realms of intimacy and personal growth.

Here’s a guide to help you bring Tantra into your relationship:

1. Start with Presence and Awareness

  • Mindful Communication
The foundation of Tantra is being fully present. In your interactions, focus on truly listening to each other without judgment. Practice speaking with intention, and let your words reflect respect, care, and love.
  • Eye Gazing
Spend time gazing into each other’s eyes. This can be a powerful way to deepen your connection. Try this in a quiet setting, without speaking, and allow yourselves to share your energy.

2. Cultivate Sacred Touch

  • Sensual Touch
Tantra places great emphasis on touch as a means of awakening the senses and creating a deeper bond. Explore each other’s bodies without rushing to sexualize the touch. Focus on feeling each sensation and enjoying the moment.

  • Slow, Conscious Lovemaking
Tantra teaches slow, deliberate, and conscious lovemaking. Rather than rushing to climax, focus on the energy exchange between you both. Slow down, breathe together, and allow your sexual energy to build slowly.

  • The Art of Massage
Regularly giving each other a gentle (tantra)massage can be a form of intimate connection. Use natural oils and focus on the sensations and energy that arise as you touch.

3. Breathing Together

  • Synchronize Breathing
Breathing together can create a powerful sense of unity. Sit together and synchronize your breath. Inhale and exhale in unison. You can also try a specific Tantric breath practice called “counter phase breathing” where your inhaling and exhaling is opposite.

4. Tantric Rituals

  • Sacred Space
Create a sacred space in your home for your tantric practices. This could be a corner of your bedroom with candles, incense, or any items that help you set an intentional mood. Keep the space clean, calm, and inviting.

  • Tantric Meditation
Meditate together, focusing on your connection and the flow of energy between you. You can meditate in silence or chant mantras, which is also a part of Tantra.

5. Embrace the Divine Feminine and Masculine Energies

  • Balance Energies
In Tantra, there’s an understanding of the feminine (Shakti) and masculine (Shiva) energies within each of us. Embrace and honor these energies within your relationship, whether it’s through allowing space for vulnerability and care (feminine energy) or strength and presence (masculine energy).

  • Create Harmonious Energy Exchange
Tantra teaches that the exchange of energy is sacred. When you engage sexually, practice not just physical pleasure but a harmonious exchange of these energies, allowing both partners to feel seen, heard, and respected.

6. Focus on Sexual Energy as Life Energy

  • Conserve and Transmute Energy
In our Tantra School, we see sexual energy as a powerful life force. Rather than seeking immediate release, you can learn to circulate and transmute this energy through your body. This could involve practices like “Kundalini” breathing or exercises to help elevate the sexual energy.

  • Sacred Union
Sex in Tantra is about creating a “Sacred Union” where both partners see each other as divine beings. It’s not about reaching orgasm or sexual pleasure alone but rather about the full integration of body, mind, and spirit.

7. Explore Tantra’s Philosophical Side

  • Spirituality
Tantra is deeply spiritual, and part of integrating it into your relationship involves looking at the larger meaning of your union. Contemplate your connection as sacred, and understand that your relationship is a spiritual path in itself.

  • Embrace Imperfection
Tantra teaches that everything is perfect as it is, even the challenges and imperfections. Rather than striving for an ideal, accept and love each other as you are, flaws and all.

8. Tantric Exercises for Couples

  • Yab-Yum Position
This is a traditional Tantric position where one partner sits cross-legged (often the masculine), and the other partner sits on top, facing them. The focus is on connecting and synchronizing breath, gaze, and energy.

  • The Practice of Energy Exchange
Lie next to each other, then slowly bring your hands into a position where one partner’s left hand is on the other’s right. Visualize and feel the flow of energy moving between you.

  • Chakra Work
You can work with each other’s chakras (energy centers in the body) through touch or meditation, bringing attention to energy blockages or imbalances.

9. Patience and Consistency

  • Tantra is not something to be rushed or forced. It’s about gradually deepening your connection. Be patient with yourselves and each other as you explore this path.
